How much money can you make working from home?
This is my personal experience working as a graphic artist designer from home, I started earning 0USD to earning a bit more than the normal offline Graphic designer here in my country, so that shows that it can be much more than just a way to earn extra money. The thing to notice is that I am not the best graphic designer in the internet, I’m a pretty normal graphic designer, but if you become reliable and can probe it the you will be able to become pretty successful online employee. Having a job graphic designer is not the only possibility as you can see though.
Basically the amount of money you make when you work from home depends on a this things:
- How much time are you willing to invest on your home business/home work
- Your level of experience/portfolio you can show to attract clients
- The clients you choose to work for
1) If you decide to quit your day job and dedicate 10 hours to work from home, then your income will be much greater than if you decide to only invest 2 hours a day on your home business.
2) The first great obstacle in succeeding in your home business is to attract clients and get contracted by them. The best way to do this is to probe to them that you are reliable by showing to them the number of jobs you have successfully completed and also show them the quality of your work. This will allow you to work for clients that will pay you more.
3) Some clients are only willing to pay 10USD, some 100USd, other 500USD or 1,000USD. The type of client you end up working for depends on the previous points. The clients who want to spend more will only accept proven reliable experts in their field, and you will only be able to deliver the job if you apply the necessary hours to finish it.
Even clients that pay 10USD won’t accept a low quality job, everyone will try to choose the best (in their own eyes) and cheapest possible, so have that in mind because the competition also will.
How to choose the right clients
Try to choose your clients wisely, don’t always seek for jobs that pay 10USD, I have made the mistake to always choose cheap clients when I started to work from home. The result was that after 2 weeks of work, I had only earned 20USD. The problem is that many clients will keep asking for adjustments or features to your work, and this will increase your work and time investment on it, it makes no sense to work 90 hours to design a graphic and be paid only 10USD, so make sure that everything is agreed up-front.
If possible try to agree with your client the number of hours, the features, the maximum number of corrections that you will allow your client to ask, and how the work will be delivered, this will allow you to avoid conflicts and that extra time you don’t want to spend on the project. Some clients will not have any remorse and will not hesitate to ask for a ridiculous amount of money that will not match the amount of work required to finish the project, so watch out with that, calculate the amount of work required, measure it against the paid suggested, discuss it with your client to reach an agreement if a change in pay is needed, and avoid inflexible clients that will only waste your time.
How? Where?
There are sites online that will make all this work from home much easier for your, there are some that offer a mediation service, which will make conflicts much easier to resolve in time and money, meaning if that the “contract” is broken by your client, the mediator will benefit you, and you will be paid the money wich was agreed by you and the client. This gives you a lot more safety, so make sure that if you join a service for online work it has this mediation system, otherwise, imagine if your client keeps abusing you and asking for more features?, how will you convince him to stop asking and pay you what you have agreed upon?, you won’t be able to convince him, you run the risk to not be paid at all and you would have lost a lot of hours in that project, that’s why its always better to work for a site that offers this mediation system.
How to succeed.
The trick to succeed with this type of home business is to set objectives to reach, first decide on your desired monthly income, how much money you need to pay your bills, send your kids to school, pay your internet connection, buy needed software, etc?, then add to that the money you desire to take as a surplus, second decide on how much money you want to earn by hour and make sure your level of experience deserves it (otherwise your clients won’t want to pay you).
Then review your clients and their projects to see how many hours will each project take you, this will help you to measure and compare if the pay offered by the client matches your hourly wage, in this way you’ll be able to discard and accept clients, focusing on the right type of client is always better than to waste time with clients that won’t help you reach your objectives, if you don’t then your home business will not be successful and that your time invested in those clients will not bring you the money you needed to send your kids to school, pay your bills, etc.
How to be chosen by a client
Don’t forget about the competition, lots of other providers will be trying to seduce your clients to choose them, so allways do your best to capture your clients attention. To do this you must communicate as best as you can with them, start giving them ideas on how to face the project right away, start working for them even before beign chosen, this is a great way to demonstrate your client your enthusiasm for helping him/her and your level of knowledge on the subject and how will you be able to help in the project. Before giving them ideas get to know the project by reading the project description, try to understand it as deeply as you can, then if there are unclear things ask them a lot of relevant questions, get the details, this will be your material to give them ideas on how will you tackle the project.
Asking questions is important because it will show that you have taken the time and effort to read their description and that you are very interested in the project. The client wants to see proof that you have done jobs like the one they need, that’s why you need a portfolio and good reviews, they also want a person who is reliable, someone they can trust, someone who sincerely wants to help them, thats why you need to give them ideas and ask questions to show them your level of interest and motivation in them.

Odesk.com This is in my opinion the best of all. You can choose to be paid per hour, not per finished project, and the great thing about it is that your client can actually monitor when you are working, this gives the client assurance that you are working, how much effort you put on your work, so make sure you are a great provider by showing them how reliable you are.
Rentacoder.com is another good site. It also has a mediation system. It’s just below Odesk in quality just because it lacks the ability to track your workers by using snapshots of their work.
