Preview: Tiny and Big (Black Pants Studio)

Tiny and Big tells the story of a thief who had stolen our hero's most valued possession - a pair of underpants. The game basically is about him trying to chase after Mr. Big who had escaped to the top of a tall mountain. Armed with a raygun and a grappling hook, you must cut pillars and solid rock to build yourself platforms to stand or jump on.

The beta build might not run smoothly on older machines, but if you can get working then there is certainly some fun to be had from slicing and dicing stones like a hot knife cutting through butter. Download it here. (Mac/Win/Linux, 122MB)

Astonishing Snatcher Throw Pillow

Granted, I've done plenty of filching from the (terrific!) Sprite Stitch blog and forum over the last two weeks, but I'm going to do it just one more time. And I am mostly unapologetic about that, because, look. Just look at this detail from an incredible, embroidered throw pillow.

All told, 26,000 stitches were required to render this scene from Hideo Kojima's Snatcher (Sega CD, 1994):

Our hero, Deckard-lookalike Gillian Seed, is crouching, very obviously ready to spring into action, with little Metal Gear at his side. It took Sprite Stitch forumgoer klammyq about eighteen months to complete this painstakingly detailed pillow. I mean, have you ever seen such a tautly-plotted pillow? (I'll answer my own question: No. You haven't.)

Glorg: One-Button Action RPG

Taking a cue from Diablo, which simplified RPG experience into a point-and-click-and-loot experience, Glorg pares the formula down even further by taking over control of your hero's movement, managing where you want to explore or adventure off to while you worry about reacting to whatever you come across.

Martin Jonasson created this procedurally generated Flash game as his submission to the Gamma 4 one-button game competition. According to Crayon Physics developer Petri Purho, who's apparently played Glorg already, the game is "very addicting" and "basically a very streamlined version of Diablo".

Sister site IndieGames pointed out another fun looking single-button game: Tom Vencel's One Button Bob, now playable at Armor Games. The action title presents a series of screens in which you have to push your button at the right time for your explorer to react in a way that allows him to survive.

Browser Game Pick: Where We Remain (Twofold Secret)

wwr.PNG

Where We Remain appears to be a simple 'save the girl' Zelda-style adventure at first glance. Yet look a little closer, and you'll find that there is so much more to it. Trapped on an island by a mysterious being, our hero must find his sweetheart and rescue her. But is there a way to escape the island?

The land looks safe enough, but stand around outside for too long and you may regret it - hiding in the caves is a good way to counter this, but the caves aren't exactly safe either. There are a bunch of pick-ups to grab, although most of them aren't pretty confusing - fortunately there is a handy guide to help us through and explain what the hell is going on.

There are three endings to find in total. Check out the video below the cut for Ortoslon finding the normal ending. Continue reading

Canabalt Fanart Leaps Off Rooftops

It turns out that Canabalt's rooftop-running hero isn't actually Michael Jackson, at least according to this new fanart from DnaTemjin that gives the dark gray and white sprite a lot more detail. The piece (full version below) also adds detail to the atmospheric game's flying doves, menacing mechs, and destroyed buildings in the background.

After seeing a link to this pop up in Canabalt developer Adam "Atomic" Saltsman's Twitter feed, I thought this would be a good opportunity to show off several of the artworks fans have created since the one-button action game took the internet and iPhone by storm. After the break you'll find re-sized images and links for fan-made sketches, wallpapers, and even a mock-up of an NES title screen.

Freeware Game Pick: ro9 (Justin Smith)

ro9 is a turn-based role-playing game in which you get to control the actions of nine different characters at the same time, using only one set of controls for all. The objective here is to get all of your heroes down to the ninth and last level of the dungeon to loot the treasure, although you can still win if some of them succumb to their injuries before reaching the goal.

There are three types of monsters in each level. Humanoids are easy to defeat, while animals or creatures take a couple more shots to kill. Bosses are the strongest, and will take quite a beating before they drop an ankh. Collecting an ankh resurrects all rogues that died on the same dungeon level.

The basic strategy here is to win enemy encounters and increase your level before proceeding down the stairs, indicated by the number of yellow squares inside the window of each hero. The red outline that surrounds each view shows the amount of damage a character has taken, and players are advised to look for a health potion if it starts to turn bright red. Download it here. Freeware Game Pick: Carnage Street (Leonardo Cavaletti)

Carnage Street is a simple 2D shooter in which you play as a hero who has to protect his city from a zombie invasion. There are only two status indicators that you have to worry about, those being your life and the state of the city itself. The game ends if you are too injured to continue, or a hundred zombies or more made it through the city's one-man defense line.

The red gauge at the bottom of the screen shows your current level, which can be increased by dispatching more zombies. The higher the level, the more zombies will appear but you will score more as well, and more destructive weapons will appear for you to collect. (Windows, 4.05MB)
