Oxeye Games’ Project B, Free Postcards

The Oxeye Games team needs your help with naming their upcoming platformer which is currently in production and scheduled for a release sometime next year. For this purpose they've printed out six different Project B postcard prints, and will send those out at random to anyone who suggests a name for their multi-platform game. If your suggested game name gets picked, a special gift will be mailed to you as well (at no extra charge).

What is Project B then? Little is known about it outside of the brief info page and leaked footage posted a couple of weeks ago. Maybe more will be revealed on the postcards?

GDC Rant: Please Finish Your Game (Chris Hecker)

Here's the video recording of Chris Hecker's rant during GDC 2010, though it starts off with Heather Chaplin's Duct Tape award acceptance speech (for having the best rant last year). Titled "Please Finish Your Game", Chris voices his opinions and concerns about game jams, competitions, game development time, and rushing to meet release schedules. If you missed our link to Tommy Refenes' iPhone rant from a day or two ago, we've embedded it after the cut for your viewing pleasure as well.

Gamma IV: Best Of The Rest

Over the course of the past couple of weeks we had written about a number of game submissions that weren't selected for the Gamma IV showcase at GDC. Barrie Ellis of One Switch Gaming has a comprehensive list of playable Gamma IV submissions posted in the Switch Gaming forums, and we'd suggest taking a look at that as well.

Here's a list of our five favorite Gamma IV submissions from those that were already released:

Fish Face (Beau Blyth) [Windows, freeware]

Fish Face (video shown above, courtesy of ortoslon) is a one-button arcade game with three levels to play, each taking roughly five to ten minutes to complete. Here you play as a fish that uses its buoyancy to move in and out of the water, avoiding walls or enemies that will hurt our aquatic friend on impact.

Red loops can be collected for points, while the blue ones act as checkpoint locations that you can return to when your fish crashes into a solid object. Continue reading

On Trial: Labyrinthica

Mike: 6 When I visited Labyrinthica’s website, the screens immediately reminded me of the Legend of Zelda. Ultimately, the game is a more generic hack and slash game. The hand drawn cutscenes and in-game characters look nice, but the dungeons themselves are sparse and boring looking. I realize they’re randomly generated, but there could’ve been [...] Continue reading

GDC Gallery: IGF Pavilion, The Nuovo Sessions and Gamma IV

Organizers of this year's Game Developers Conference and Independent Games Festival have been documenting the March 9th-13th San Francisco event in visual form.

Following pictures from the Indie Games Summit and from the IGF Awards Ceremony, here's a selection of pictures from the IGF Pavilion on the GDC 2010 show floor, which was open from Thursday, March 11th through Saturday, March 13th to all event attendees.

Also in this set of pictures are several from 'The Nuovo Sessions', a special GDC Main Conference event featuring mini-talks from finalists and honorable mentions for the IGF Nuovo Award for this year, alongside like-minded individuals. The indie-centric Gamma IV showcase and GDC show floor Pavilion are also showcased in pictorial form.
